How to Wash and Care for a Leafy Suit

After every hunt

  • Shake out debris such as burrs, seeds, sticks and leaves.
  • Let it dry fully after wet or dewy hunts before packing it in its carry bag.
  • Check for snags and trim loose threads instead of pulling them.

How to wash a leafy suit

Check the care label first. Instructions on the label sewn into your gear always come first. If your suit needs a full cleaning and the label allows it:

  1. Brush or shake off dried mud and debris.
  2. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, scent-free detergent.
  3. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Softener can leave scent and residue.
  4. Rinse well and press out water gently. Don’t wring or twist the leaves.
  5. Hang or lay flat to air dry, out of direct sunlight.

Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth instead of washing the whole suit. Many hunters only fully wash a leafy suit once or twice a season.

Gloves, masks, gaiters and blind covers

Follow each item’s care label. Smaller pieces like gloves, face masks and neck gaiters get the most sweat and handling, so they may need cleaning more often. Let blind covers dry fully before folding, and shake out debris after each use.

Storage between seasons

  • Store clean and fully dry to prevent mildew and odor.
  • Keep it in a cool, dark place. Long sun exposure can fade any fabric.
  • Store loosely rolled or on a wide hanger so leaves are not crushed.
  • Keep it away from gasoline, smoke and strong odors if you hunt scent-sensitive game.

Quick field repairs

Snagged a leaf on a briar? Trim loose threads with scissors instead of pulling them. Small tears in the mesh can be closed with a needle and thread or a fabric repair patch. Check zippers and drawcords before the season so you aren’t fixing gear in the dark.
