Elk have sharp eyes, and bulls coming to a call often hang up just out of range looking for the cow or bull they heard. When they are inside 40 yards, a human shape that does not belong is enough to send them back into the timber. A 3D leafy suit breaks up that shape while you wait, call and draw.

Picking a pattern
Early-season elk country ranges from dark timber to green aspens and open parks. Realtree APX is a strong all-around choice for mixed cover. Realtree Timber suits darker timber, and Mossy Oak Greenleaf or Obsession fit green meadows and brush.
Field tips
- Put the suit on before the last approach, not at the trailhead, to stay cool on the climb.
- Set up with cover behind you and shooting lanes in front.
- Have your caller set up behind the shooter so a bull looks past you.
- Draw when the bull’s head is behind a tree.
- Watch the thermals. Camo hides you from eyes, not noses.
Safety first: many states require blaze orange during firearm seasons, and the rules differ by state and species. Check your state wildlife agency’s regulations before you hunt, and wear orange where it is required.
