Camouflage for Wildlife Photography and Birding
Why camouflage helps photographers
Animals that see a person usually change what they are doing: they freeze, stare, or leave. Concealment lets you capture natural behavior such as feeding, displaying and interacting, at closer range. Like hunters, photographers are spotted by outline, a bright face and moving hands, so the same gear works.
Recommended setup
- Leafy suit: the Adult Leafy Suit is light, quiet and breathable for long sits. The Outfitter Series adds pockets for batteries, cards and a phone.
- Gloves: leafy gloves hide hands on the camera and lens. Textured palms help with grip.
- Face: a 3D leafy face mask or neck gaiter hides your face behind the viewfinder.
- Blind: a leafy blind cover (5 × 8 or 5 × 16 feet) on a folding blind frame makes a quick hide at a pond, feeder or field edge.
Tips for getting closer
- Set up before animals arrive, at first light or ahead of the evening feeding time.
- Use natural cover behind you and keep the sun at your back when you can.
- Move slowly and keep the lens still. Long lenses catch light, so keep them shaded.
- Respect wildlife. Back off if an animal shows stress, and follow rules on public land and nesting areas.
Choosing a pattern
Spring and summer marshes and woods: Mossy Oak Greenleaf or Obsession. Fall and winter: Realtree Timber or APX.
